Small grants make big impact across country SA - Heaps Good Day sends a heaps good message

Orroroo Area School used its grant to hold a Heaps Good Day. As the name implies, the intention was to hold a fun, creative day for students but with an important underlying message - anti-bullying.

“We wanted to use a positive approach to launch our anti-bullying campaign and blend it with other health strategies,’ said Orroroo Area School teacher Gaye Kuerschner.

“Our students know bullying is wrong, but we wanted to tackle it in an innovative way that really allowed them take on board the impacts of bullying, by thinking about it in a different way.”

Principal Matthew Dignan, together with some skits by the SRC students, explained the difference between rude, mean and bullying behaviour. This entertaining introduction demonstrated how to differentiate between these anti-social behaviours and how to ‘spot it out, speak it out and stamp it out’.

Students across the whole school took part in a range of activities, including positive song writing and musical performances, team challenges, interactive sessions about road safety, yoga, mindfulness, random acts of kindness, everybody fits, healthy headspace and a SAPOL presentation on Drugs and Alcohol.

It was a popular day of activities and learning with positive feedback from all ages.
